Professor Ratanaporn Setakul, pre-eminent Thai historian, writes and illustrates with maps and portraits the attempt of King Mongut to complete the aborted attempt of Rama III, but he too failed and with it the ambition of Siam to extend its control of the Shan area in its competition with the Burmese.
