ST. ANTHONY — If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and the Pea,” you will be in for an enormous surprise at this year’s Pioneer Days play.

“Once Upon a mattress,” is a musical rendition of the classic children’s fairy tale where the Princess Winnifred swims the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab and and we learn that it wasn’t really a pea that caused the princess to endure a sleepless night.

The play’s synopsis calls it is a hilarious and romantic comedy with beautiful music and some side-splitting shenanigans. According to the play’s producer, Debbie Seare, the local cast numbers almost 100 people.

The play will be presented July 21, 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. at South Fremont High School’s Little Theater. A matinee performance will be presented at 3 p.m. following the Pioneer Days parade.

Some of the lead characters in the play include Chaz Johnson as Princess Winnifred, Nathan Smith as Prince Duntless the Drab, Marcie Davis as the Queen Aggravain, Chance Eckman as the King, Micahel Seare as Sir Harry, Karly Moore as Lady Larkin, Derek Eckman as the Minstrel, Jacob Christensen as the Jester, Daniel Seare as the Wizzard, and Ryan Reborio as Sir Studley. The play is directed by Mark Seare.

Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance from Falls Drug, St. Anthony Motors, Chandler Insurance, Mill Iron Staple Leather and the St. Anthony Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Playgoers are encouraged to come early as seating will be limited.
