Bear program to host summer hikes

ISLAND PARK — The Island Park Bear program will host several nature hikes this summer with range biologists, forestry biologists, wildlife biologists, and bear safety experts.
According to Allison McLaughlin, the bear education specialist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, hikers will explore different area hiking trails. Hikes are tentatively set for Fridays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m.
“This is a great opportunity to get out, enjoy a great hike with a fun group, and learn about plants, wildlife, and bear safety,” says McLaughlin.
Friday, July 16: Nature hike to Mesa Marsh with guest Jen Chutz, wildlife biologist with the US Forest Service. Meet at the Lower Mesa Falls parking lot at 1 p.m.
Saturday, July 24: Bear Safety Interactive Trail, Box Canyon Trailhead at 10 a.m.
Friday, July 30: Nature hike with guest naturalist Jodi Vincent of Harriman State Park. Meet at Harriman State Park, Ranchview parking lot at 1 p.m.
Saturday, August 21: Bear Safety Interactive Trail, Box Canyon Trailhead at 10 a.m.
Friday, August 27: Nature Hike with guest botanist and habitat specialist Kim Ragotzkie of the Henry’s Fork Foundation. Meet at the Targhee Creek Trailhead 1 p.m.
