Summer minister blends theology and art
Rev. C.D. Weaver chats with Little Church in the Pines members soon after he arrived in Island Park with his wife, Myra.

ISLAND PARK — A well-traveled minister, retired seminary dean, and artist will serve as the Little Church in the Pines’ summer minister starting with the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, May 30. The Rev. Dr. Clarence Deleon (“C.D.”) Weaver and his wife, Myra, will live in the Mack’s Inn Campground near the church.

Weaver is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). After completing university and seminary studies, he did post-graduate work in the University of Basel, Switzerland, and the universities of Tuebingen and Goettingen in Germany He also studied in France and Israel.

He served as the minister of Grace Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, FL. This church sent him to conduct mission consultations in South America, Africa, and the Orient.

In 1983, he was invited to join the staff of the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, where he served 16 years as Dean of Student Life and Pastor to Students before retiring in 1999. Then, he was named Artist-in-Residence at the seminary.

Weaver’s interest in art bloomed when he worshipped in European cathedrals and began to appreciate sculpture, metal casting, and hand-forged ornamental iron in a liturgical setting. He holds a certificate in welding technology with a specialization in art metals and a certificate in jewelry fabrication from Austin Community College. He designs art and liturgical pieces for churches, institutions, agencies, private individuals, and homes.

Weaver has shaped his ministry around the theological principals of truth, goodness, and beauty. His artwork reflects church doctrine, ethics, and aesthetic values. Some of his carvings have been featured in the journal, “ARTS: Art in Religious and Theological Studies.” His articles and essays on theology and the arts have been published in the journal, “Lectionary Holiletics.”

He and Myra have three sons.
