A homecoming to remember

By JANE DANIELS

We all love to have a story to tell and Friday, September 15, 2006 gave the students at North Fremont High an occasion to remember. The homecoming parade was scheduled to begin, but so was the rain. The floats turned soggy and a gust of wind tipped  the Seniors’ float into an odd looking entry. The royalty riding in open convertibles  might have guessed they were in boats. The band bravely played until the sound gradually sank.

The parade may have been a mess to some, but those kids who love a story have the winner for many years to come.

The weather change reminded me that parts of the following article which appeared in “Calamity's Corner,” by column in the Villager, in the late 1980's would soon be appropriate for Island Park.

“Last week you had to decide whether you needed to take a sweater or not when you were going out in the heat of the day. At times this week the decision was whether you even wanted to go outside at all. And if you did brave the elements, the decision was not whether to add a layer of clothing , but how much you could get covered up and by how many layers.

“Last week, boats were running up and down the highway as if it were still the height of the fishing season. This week, the few remaining boats are seeking portage close to a plowed road so they can head home on the next sunny day.

“A few days ago, a trip to the valley or West Yellowstone meant getting in the car and you were on your way. Now you have to make sure you have clothing to wear in case you get stuck and have to push. Windshields have to be cleaned of unwanted snow. Chains have to be located and placed in the car's trunk.”

Last week, you fought mud caused by some welcome rain if you went for a ride out to the Homecoming to Remember.
